IMAGES OF TETUAN CENTRAL SCHOOL EVACUATION CENTER @ OCTOBER 2013

Ciudad Medical Zamboanga had a whole day affair at the Tetuan Central School for a composite program involving a Medical Mission including Breast Wellness - Psychosocial activities (for all ages graced by Jolibee) - Food and Relief Operations last October 2013 as part of the Tenth Year Anniversary of CMZ !

We made friends with amiable little girls called Charlotte and company.  I was asking how they lived there and they willingly invited us to check out their living conditions as they stayed in several classrooms of this elementary school.

So here is a glimpse of their life in an evacuation center. Most of the evacuees here are from Sta. Barbara, Lustre, Sta. Catalina and Mariki!

Welcome!

There are still signs of the several days with heavy rain.

They also have stores around the place...

Here is Room 2 and Room 37 (I hope I remember the rooms right!). Charlotte shared that there are about 5 families living in each room.
The kids have already gotten used to their life in the center and have found ways to entertain themselves such as by games and dancing. But, they also shared that they were afraid of the MNLF and the exchange of fire during the Stand-off. They also sometimes fear the sound of the hovering helicopters!

It was unfortunate, though, that the kids were afraid of having their heads chopped off because someone shared to the kids, a cellphone video of children who were beheaded. It seems the kids thought that this video is current, but, it this may have been an older video probably from another country because we did not hear this kind of atrocity during this Zamboanga City Siege 2013.

I would like to request the adults: Please do not frighten the kids in that way. Some kids verbally expressed that he couldn't sleep at night after watching the video.

Then, I was teasing Charlotte that she could be a beauty queen when she grows up. However, she said she'd prefer to be a soldier!!!

As we moved around the evacuation center, here are more scenes...

And this family lost their houses during the fire in the conflict area.

This is the portable comfort room for urinating only. They had other toilets nearer their rooms.

Some can still relax in this times.

The situation in this evacuation center is still fine considering that the evacuees respect the places they are living in now.  They clean the place and the classrooms still look clean and arranged.  And, the families have learned how to live with each other.

The kids' smiles are so sincere and it was so interesting that they could cling to me and yet, I still felt comfortable. (And, the JSOTF-P have also mentioned that the kids were also so friendly with some of their members) Two of the kids smiled and said, "Can you take us home?"

One of the things the kids were really asking if there are toys to be given away...fortunately, we also distributed toys and clothes aside from relief goods! I realized even in dismal events, the children still needed things which could give them joy.
This was a very enlightening day for us. The kids can easily adapt against all odds. There are some who are still afraid, thus, the importance of Stress Debriefing should be emphasized.

It seems after the series of grave natural calamities such as the Earthquake in Cebu and Bohol and now, Super Typhoon Yolanda, we in Zamboanga City are now feeling blessed. We did undergo a very dragging and dangerous incident, but, it seems what happened in Zamboanga in three weeks happened to Yolanda's victims in just a few hours and sparing  no one.

We are now in the Rebuilding Phase, although, this isn't that easy either. Some of the evacuees may have gone home by now. We do hope that they too could rebuild their own lives and rise above this adversity!

ZAMBOANGA CRISIS 2013: NO PAL FLIGHTS UP TO SEPT. 21, 2013

September 13, 2013

Tonight, at about 10 p.m., I was called by a lady named Lian representing PAL Express, who informed me that my PAL Express flight next week is already cancelled and the PAL advisory is until September 21, 2013. She also added that they cannot assure us of the September 22 flights.

She gave the options for me whether to cancel the flights and be refunded in full or I rebook the flights within one month from today without any penalty. The PAL Express number she gave is (02)855-9000.

Then, I saw the Ms. Mary June Bugante's Facebook post:

This is for your information and guidance....

ZCMC SCENES ON THE DAYS OF THE ZAMBOANGA CRISIS SEPTEMBER 2013

I am not connected with the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC), but I am intrigued (and shocked!!!) with such a far-fetched situation the main government hospital is in now!

It is quite unfortunate that the hospital (and my clinic) is located in Sta. Catalina and close to Sta. Barbara where the Zamboanga Crisis is happening.

When the MRI engineer asked our technologist, "How far is ZCMC from the affected area?" and she answered, "Just a hollow block wall separating the two places!" So you can imagine WHY the evacuation should take place!!!

Here are images from the GBPI TV 11 footages which I photographed from TV:
the main entrance of the Zamboanga City Medical Center...
this is my clinic across the ZCMC!
never in our farthest dream...

Even if we consider terrorism as one of the major risks in our City, it is unimaginable that the main government hospital would completely evacuate and relocate to the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) gym.

There were also many patients who decided to go home whether with advice or against advice rather than stay at the WMSU gym, but of course, there were still many patients to serve.

So here are some images at the WMSU Gym from Dr. George Rojo:

I was attracted by the status posted by my friend, Dr. Afdal Kunting which goes this way:

So many unsung heroes in this crisis.. Those ambulance drivers with steely nerves, the IWs who carried, lifted and dragged patients and equipment, with some even being shot at by snipers, the hospital and agency guards who braved the dead of night... The efficient nurses, supply, pharmacy, laboratory pips... We have lived up to the grand legacy of our hospital... Happy 95th anniversary ZCMC!

Don't you think his message encapsulates the essence of ZCMC in the midst of the crisis? I believe it really does!!! (Would be nice if you drop a comment if you agree!)

In the next days, we do hope this Zamboanga crisis will be solved favorably.

We know the hostages, evacuees and those who live in the affected areas are in a more dismal situation and things will be better for them only if the Zamboanga crisis will end.
a beautiful image of optimism = = from Joko R.

Let us all pray together for the immediate resolution of this situation!!!

CMZ SCENES ON THE DAYS OF THE ZAMBOANGA CRISIS SEPTEMBER 9, 2013

I wrote this down because I strongly felt how my family and friends worried about us with all the news about the Zamboanga Crisis this September 9, 10 and still ongoing!

My first message to reassure everyone went this way...
For our family and friends, don't worry about us...we are okay. However, Zamboanga City is not in a good situation and it enters our minds that there are some people around who want to divert the issue of the Pork Barrel scam and using ZC in the process! But yes, we do need prayers!!!

This message gathered about a 110 likes and about 50 comments. So, I felt I had to be more clear in what I meant by saying OKAY and so I shared this album in Facebook and indeed, I wrote the status in CAPITAL LETTERS... maybe, to emphasize how I felt and maybe, to express our heightened emotions at this time of adversity.

Sharing photos is my way of making visual "how okay we are"... but as my friend Mercy said, "stay safe. we worry about you just the same. everyone is praying".

My Facebook message goes this way:
FAMILY AND FRIENDS...THANK YOU FOR ALL THE PRAYERS AND THE CONCERN... I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THESE PHOTOS SO YOU KNOW HOW WE ARE. DON'T WORRY ABOUT US!
ZAMBOANGA CITY, HOWEVER, IS NOT AS FORTUNATE WITH THE ONGOING CRISIS, WITH THE ENCOUNTERS, VICTIMS, EVACUEES, EVACUATED ZCMC (GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL MOVED TO THE WMSU GYM WHERE GEORGE IS ALSO SERVING!), NO BUSINESSES, NO FLIGHTS!
THIS IS A DARK NIGHT FOR Z.C. BUT THIS IS MEANT TO PURIFY US (according to Sr. Mary) ...
WE MAY NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO US, BUT I KNOW, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING GREATER THAT WILL COME UPON US.
AS EARLY AS NOW, CMZ LEADERS AND WORKFORCE HAVE EXUDED PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE AND THE VALUES THAT CMZ STANDS FOR... Competence...Integrity...Unity...Dynamism...Accountability...Driven by Results!... AND WE ARE TOUCHED THAT MEGA-POSITIVE VIBES ARE FELT IN SUCH AN ULTRA-NEGATIVE SITUATION!
LET US CONTINUE TO KEEP OUR FAITH... AND REMAIN UNITED FOR A UNITED ZAMBOANGA CITY!

The stream of photos and collages still show the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga family with beaming faces... apprehensive... but ever willing to serve... with preparations now ready to be put in action.

Our only limitation is that the hospital census is already full in the first place! We can accommodate treatment for those who need immediate care, but we have a limitation to the possibility of admissions.

There are no gruesome pictures in this set. We are "far", but since Zamboanga City is small, far is just about a kilometer away! We are fortunate not to be in the center of things, but we worry for our staff who live in the areas concerned.
Senior Leaders (with President Dr. Joven Monsanto and CEO, Atty. Jhihann Hairun-Natividad at the helm)
Situation...Updates...Further planning...READY!!!

Calls flood in....
outside Emergency Room...
as we provide service, scene needs to be safe!

Because we have been preparing for so long ... we can afford to smile at the height of the crisis... we are ready!!!
At the lobby, everyone was listening intently to the LED TV...what is really happening in Zamboanga City?
just outside the ER, healthcare staff and soldiers ...READY!!!
Emergency Room ...READY!!!
Although, there were six injured in the early morning of the Zamboanga Crisis, the patients not related to the disaster still continue to come...

Triaging at the lobby... with our giraffe portable Siemens X-ray!
Radiology... READY!

CT and MRI ... READY!
Laboratory ... READY!

Intensive Care Unit...READY!
One of the crisis victims is in ICU...
Wards ... READY!
OR/DR ... READY!
If you think about it, our first admission (after the six injured) was a pregnant patient because she could not be accommodated at the government hospital which is located in the affected area!

Food is available to all the workforce, including the support staff and security forces! Thanks to Seafood House for being available considering the difficulty in resources the whole community is in...

Linen and laundry... ready!

Cardio-Pulmo, Security, Central Supply, Maintenance and Physicians... READY!
from afar... effect of the blast and fire in Sta. Barbara!
We thank the whole workforce and support staff for the competence, the positive attitude and the willingness to serve = = Execom!

I am proud of the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga family. We are ongoing with our efforts for the PQA and this, I believe is one of the reasons for the streamlined preparations and efforts. We hope we can further develop these and more so, sustain these for PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE!

P.S. 1
Inasmuch as we are fortunate in this side of the City, we feel for our brothers and sisters who are indeed suffering... the mental torture... the fear for the unknown... the emotional surge... the real physical injuries... the reality of danger...so much the loss!

Especially, our own staff who live in these affected places, we have heard their plight of evacuating from their areas through the muddy fishponds and mangroves. We pray for their safety!

We also salute our colleagues and friends from the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC), (including Dr. George Rojo), who is in a most unusual situation since ZCMC's location is in the center of the skirmishes.

Never in our wildest thoughts could we imagine the evacuation of a very large institution, who we depend upon to take care of patients from mass casualties and in times of crisis.

Over a hundred patients are moved to the SATELLITE HOSPITAL at the Western Mindanao Medical Center (WMSU) gym!

P.S. 2
So proud to hear CMZ Chairman, Mr. Edwin To in the radio for their support to the City Government as the representative of the Business Community.

P.S. 3
With this Crisis, the bid of CMZ for the PQA is even in jeopardy since who would want to come to Zamboanga City in this kind of security status! But, we are still hopeful that the circumstances improve very soon so things fall back in place and life goes back to normal!

We pray so hard that the Zamboanga Crisis would be solved immediately...THANK YOU for joining us in our PRAYERS!!!
